Williams Memorial Elementary School students in Mrs. Rickborn’s classes studied air resistance with an egg drop challenge! Students designed contraptions meant to slow the speed of their drop and protect the egg inside. They began by sketching their designs, then built and retested them, working to create a device with a large enough surface area using only the limited supplies provided. The experiment brought science to life with creativity, problem-solving, and plenty of excitement! 🥚🚀

“Where Children Play To Learn” 💛

On Wednesday, new K–5 ELA teachers participated in training on Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), the high-quality instructional materials adopted by DD4 last year.

Spearheaded by our Curriculum Department, this hands-on training helps teachers and coaches effectively use CKLA in alignment with the SC College- and Career-Ready Standards and the Science of Reading. Teachers explored what high-quality curriculum looks like in practice, how to engage students in critical and creative thinking, and how to use assessments to identify student needs and provide targeted support.

CKLA builds strong readers, writers, and thinkers through evidence-based practices.

In grades K–2, the curriculum is organized into skills (phonological awareness, phonics, fluency) and knowledge (vocabulary and background knowledge).

In grades 3–5, it builds on these foundations while expanding background knowledge and comprehension.

We are excited to see our teachers bring these tools to life in the classroom, ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.
